% Dextrose
Dextrose is a type of sugar that is commonly used in intravenous (IV) fluids to provide energy to patients, including dogs and cats. Calculating the appropriate amount of dextrose to administer to a dog or cat will depend on the animal's weight and the concentration of the dextrose solution.
We are calculating the amount of stock dextrose solution to add to a fluid bag in order to make a final dextrose solution. This calculation is important because it helps ensure that the final dextrose solution has the desired concentration and volume.
Formula:
The formula for calculating the amount of stock dextrose solution to add to a fluid bag in order to make a final dextrose solution is as follows:
Stock Dextrose solution amount = (Final Dextrose Solution / Stock Dextrose Solution) x Fluid Bag Volume
Example:
To illustrate how these calculations work, let's say you have a 1000 mL fluid bag and you want to make a final dextrose solution that is 5% using a stock dextrose solution that is 50%. The calculations would be as follows:
Stock Dextrose solution amount = (5 / 50) x 100 mL = 100 mL
Therefore, to make 5% Dextrose solution:
Step 1: Remove 100 mL fluid from the 1000 mL fluid bag.
Step 2: Then add 100 mL of 50% Dextrose solution into the fluid bag to make a total volume of 1000 mL. The end result will be a 5% Dextrose solution.
